Here we are, the beginning of this blog. We’ll start by explaining our name: Faith in Plants. It all began from our dad, the self-dubbed “Jay-Z”. He began our family on this plant based journey over 7 years ago, and hasn’t looked back since. He’s the true inspiration for our love of fine food, health, and this blog.
Let’s go back to Houston, TX, in 2007. All five of us were happily living, enjoying the best organic, grass fed, hormone free milk and meat from local farm raised cows. Although we were always a bit hesitant about meat, milk was a daily staple. We still had a diet full of organic fruits and veggies, but eating anything else never occurred to us.
This all changed with one visit to the doctor: Jay-Z had not just high, but medication-requiring high cholesterol levels. Our family has never been quick to take medications, and really don’t keep any in the house. We prefer to live a healthy, wholesome lifestyle, so when Jay-Z’s cholesterol levels signified that something was off, we knew it was time to make a change.
One by one, we read The China Study, by T. Colin Cambell. And one by one, we stopped eating animal products. Jay-Z’s motto was always to just “Have some faith in plants”, and we are! Although since then we have seen some articles refuting the China Study’s claim, how we felt on a plant based diet is what has kept us going on this path. We are having faith that they can nourish and sustain us and help us lead healthy, happy lives! We hope that this can let you have some faith in plants too.
It hasn’t always been perfect, and I think the only one of us who never makes mistakes is Jay-Z, but we are all excited to continue to learn. We call this a journey. We’re not “there yet”, and I’m not sure if we’ll ever be. But we’re loving the experience!
